Text Box: The DDA meets 8:15 a.m. this ¨ Monday in the Clam Lake Township Hall. As part of the meeting, members will recognize outgoing director Sharon Flewelling and board member Dean DeKryger.
There also will be a presentation on how business can deal with power surges and how to seek a Special Use Permit.
McKeown said the DDA has a new member in mind but he’s hopeful that other business leaders in the township will get involved.
The Clam Lake DDA district runs from the area near VanDrie Home Furnishings along Mackinaw Trail to the El Dorado. Most of the area is zoned either office service with some commercial.
To improve business, McKeown said the DDA has developed a five-year plan which sets goals for sewer, water and commercial development while detailing available land and buildings.
Right now, one focus is on the land adjacent to VanDrie. McKeown said the DDA is willing to offer some assistance for any business interested in locating there, including the possibility of constructing necessary street infrastructure.
The bigger problem for the agency is utilities. Although McKeown believes the township could provide water, sewer could be a bigger challenge.
"To do that, we have to get the city to allow us to go into the sewer pipes," he said. "Any development would bring business into the city of Cadillac. Anything we get there would help the city."
There are advantages to locating a business in a township, namely taxes are much lower, McKeown said.
The DDA also is looking to develop incentive programs but its budget is limited to about $80,000 annually. The DDA is willing to help with financing, infrastructure or whatever else it can.
